Talking to Veterinarian, CamilleToday on Let’s Get Working we are talking to Veterinarian, Camille on how to go about gaining employment in the veternary field.

What does a Veterinarian do?

  • General health
  • Surgery
  • Consultations
  • Prescribe medication

    What workers do you employ?

  • Vet – 5 years, 40 hours a week at University
  • Vet nurse – 2 years Certificate IV at TAFE, traineeship
  • Kennel hands – part-time (10-12 hours a week), clean kennels while studying
  • Practice manager

    Lots of resumes come in...

  • Work Experience from schools
  • All resumes are kept

    What do you look for in an employer?

  • What else do they have other than love animals
  • Extra activities – work experience, Volunteer work, you have your own pets

    Make sure you have a resume
    Hand in your resume in person as it makes it special. You can get to see the clinic and the Veterinarian can meet you.If you just send your resume in the post, you are sending the signal that you have probably sent your resume to 20 other vets.

    What makes a potential employer stand out?

  • Types of resume’s
  • Cold calling (visiting the vet to hand in resume)
  • Hours of work
  • How they would fit into the clinic

    Interviews

  • Select interviewees
  • Interview with Veterinarian & Practice Manager

    Questions in an interview

  • What have they done in the past? (expand from resume)
  • What jobs you did before (expand from resume)
  • Team player/like working alone
  • Goals for next 5 years
  • If your friends/enemy could describe, how would they describe you?
  • What did you like most about your last job?
